Our Story
Phoenix Charter Academy provides rigorous and individualized alternative education at three high schools across Massachusetts.
For two decades, Phoenix has helped thousands of young people in Massachusetts overcome obstacles to their education, rediscover their strengths, and build futures filled with possibility.
Since opening our first campus in 2006, Phoenix has remained grounded in a simple belief: every young person deserves a school that meets them where they are and challenges them to succeed. While the needs of students and the world around us have evolved, our mission has remained constant. Over the last 20 years, the autonomy of our charter has given us the freedom to evolve alongside our students – developing new approaches, expanding opportunities, and demonstrating what is possible when schools are built around young people’s strengths.

Proof Of Concept & Expansion
Phoenix Chelsea opens, serving 75 students with a bold vision for alternative education in Massachusetts.
Phoenix Chelsea graduates its first class of reengaged youth: 7 students, all college-bound.
A proven model for giving young people second chances, Phoenix Chelsea earns an unconditional 5-year charter renewal.
- Phoenix Academy Lawrence launches in partnership with Lawrence Public Schools.
- Phoenix establishes a Charter Management Organization (CMO) to support a growing network, now serving over 300 students statewide.
- Phoenix Charter Academy Springfield opens, expanding access to Phoenix for over 500 students across Massachusetts.
- Phoenix Lawrence graduates its first class of 5 college-bound students.
Phoenix Springfield graduates its first class of 9 college-bound students, bringing the number of Phoenix alumni to over 200 graduates.

Innovation & Resilience
- Phoenix begins the shifts to a Restorative Justice approach across its campuses.
- Phoenix transitions to a Competency-Based Learning model, prioritizing mastery over seat time and laying the foundation for a self-paced, highly individualized student experience.
- Phoenix Academy Lawrence is granted a Commonwealth Charter, becoming Phoenix Charter Academy Lawrence.
- Phoenix begins implementing its Primary Person Model, ensuring every student is paired with a dedicated adult who serves as their champion and accountability partner.
Phoenix launches dual-enrollment opportunities with local community colleges, becoming one of the first alternative high schools in the state to do so.
In response to COVID-19, Phoenix shifts to remote learning and pilots a fully self-paced, individualized academic model.
Phoenix reopens campuses and commits to sustaining and innovating upon its new self-paced, student-centered model.

Deepening Impact & Scaling Opportunities
Phoenix launches its first career pathway in Chelsea, with 6 students earning industry-recognized healthcare certifications in the first year.
- All campuses earn Innovation Career Pathway designations in Healthcare or Life Sciences from DESE.
- Phoenix sets a new record: 36 students complete college or career certification coursework while still in high school.
Phoenix surpasses that milestone, with 43 students completing college or career certification programs.
- Phoenix celebrates 20 years of impact
- New record achieved: 80 students earning college credit or industry-recognized credentials.
- All three campuses apply for official Early College designations from DESE.
