Our Academies
We do not believe in one-size-fits-all education. With fewer than 200 students per campus, our staff specialize in creating individualized pathways for every young person. Because success at Phoenix isn’t about fitting students into a system – it’s about building a system designed around each student.

In 2006 Phoenix was launched with 75 students as one of the first alternative schools in Massachusetts.
Today we are proud to serve more than 500 students each year as the only charter public school group spanning the entire state, with campuses in Chelsea, Lawrence, and Springfield. And while each of our academies reflects its local community, all of them are grounded in our commitment to give young people a second chance to reconnect with their education and to reignite their own potential.

We are making an impact.

What makes Phoenix Charter Academy so unique?
Check out some core elements of our programming below:
-
Competency-Based Learning Model
At Phoenix schools, we don’t have traditional grade levels. Instead, our students advance through courses when they reach competence on key skills. Phoenix classrooms are self-paced, allowing our teachers to help students deepen their understanding when they need time, and accelerate their progress when they’re ready.
-
Restorative Justice Practices
Rooted in the practices of indigenous communities around the world, restorative justice practices are deeply embedded into the fabric of our schools. At Phoenix, we have incorporated these practices into a multi-tiered support system that includes community building, problem solving, and student re-integration following serious harm. Students and staff regularly lead and participate in restorative circles, allowing them to build community and foster empathy and understanding in one another, helping to build a more equitable world.
-
All Classrooms for All Learners
Students come to Phoenix with a variety of skill levels, gifts, and challenges. Regardless of age, language, special need, or literacy-level, all students learn together in the same classrooms. Our classes are taught by two co-teachers, each skilled in adapting lessons for all students – including students with disabilities and English Language Learners.
