Listen as Mike Caban, a long-time staff member at Phoenix Lawrence, explains why he chose to work at Phoenix.

All Students Can Succeed

Phoenix was founded on the unwavering belief that all students can succeed. Our students often didn’t “fit the mold” of their previous schools. At Phoenix we strive to break that mold, providing a unique and revolutionary educational experience. In order for all students to succeed, we believe in maintaining high expectations, providing a holistic system of supports, affirming our students’ identities, and differentiating for each student’s unique needs and gifts.

Our Values

Each Phoenix campus is shaped by the values of the students, families, and staff who are compose it. While each community is unique, shared themes run throughout: hard work and resilience, honest and at times difficult conversations, accountability for one’s actions, the value of second chances, and a belief in the inherent worth of every individual. These values come to life in intentionally small school settings where belonging is central.

“Serving these students, learning their stories, celebrating their successes, and supporting their needs has reinvigorated the passion I once thought I had lost. In my nine years of teaching, I have never felt this level of fulfillment. Phoenix scholars always find a way to fill your cup. I am home, and Phoenix is my why.”

- Joseph Saucedo

Humanities Teacher (Lawrence)

“Phoenix changed my life when I was just 16 years old. It became a place where I was seen, supported, and given the opportunity to see a different future for myself. I came back as an employee because I wanted to give back to the school and community that had given so much to me. I know firsthand what Phoenix can mean to a young person because I was that young person.”

- Angela Rivera

Manager of Operations & Communications (Statewide)

"I feel so privileged to work with our students at Phoenix. They really value their relationships with us as staff, and the future college and career pathways that Phoenix provides - pathways which may have been denied to them before coming to Phoenix. And because of that, they work harder, and we help them overcome whatever obstacles are in their way, as a team."

- Zandrina Atherley

Director of Post-Secondary Success (Springfield)

“The care and attention that we pour into our students is clear and evident. There are no students who ‘slip through the cracks’ at Phoenix. Every single scholar has a teacher (or two or three!) with whom they have a special connection: Someone that they visit every morning for a check in, go to when things get overwhelming, and who also makes sure they're coming to school and staying on the right path."

- Aanssy Allicock

Humanities Teacher (Springfield)

“Phoenix strives to support students in a way that honors the whole learner—academically and socially/emotionally, while taking into account each student’s strengths, interests, and preferences as they plan for life after high school. As a special educator for over 14 years, I value that individualized approach for ALL students, including students with disabilities.”

- E. Leigh Zongrone

Director of Special Education (Statewide)

“I was drawn to Phoenix by the way the curriculum is differentiated to meet the needs of students. Our unique learning model allows everyone to progress without being held back or having to wait for the whole class. Students are in control of their education. I wanted to be part of something I believed should be in all schools.”

- Susie Abdou

English Language Development Teacher (Springfield)
