Why Work at Phoenix?

The Phoenix Charter Academy Network is comprised of three open-enrollment, college and career preparatory public high schools in Massachusetts. We proudly serve over 500 students each year from Chelsea, Lawrence, Springfield, and their surrounding communities. Phoenix schools combine rigorous academics with relentless student supports so that our students reach proficiency on the MCAS, graduate from high school, and succeed in college or a career pathway of their choice.

Why work at Phoenix? Here are a few of the most important reasons:

  • Our culture of positive youth development, which prioritizes transformative relationships with young people;
  • Our innovative academic model built on competency-based learning, self-paced / blended learning, post-secondary success, and more;
  • Our commitment to restorative justice, in principle and in everyday practices;
  • Our commitment to be a part of a larger anti-racist educational movement;
  • Our robust system of professional development and coaching for all staff, as well as growth opportunities for career advancement;
  • Our strength of community and inclusivity, where we strive to make every student and staff member feel seen and heard.

What We Believe

  • All students can succeed

    Phoenix was founded on the unwavering belief that all students can succeed. Our students often didn’t “fit the mold” of their previous schools. At Phoenix we strive to break that mold, providing a unique and revolutionary educational experience. In order for all students to succeed, we believe in maintaining high expectations, providing a holistic system of supports, affirming our students’ identities, and differentiating for each student’s unique needs and gifts.

  • DEI Vision

    We refuse to allow historical and current systems of oppression to continue to predetermine the pathways of our students. We understand that we, as a school community, must actively dismantle these systems of oppression that may exist within our walls in order to change the systems outside of our walls. As part of our Action Plan for Diversity Equity & Inclusion, we are committed to providing the time, space, and resources necessary to realizing this shared vision.

Our Stories

  • Liliana Dilonex

    “Phoenix staff are so diverse - we all come from different backgrounds, but we’re united in the belief that our students deserve an excellent and equitable education, and the opportunity to achieve at their highest potential. Phoenix staff have a saying that “everything we need to make a positive impact is already here” - I love how each of us has something of value to bring to our students and the community.”

    “I came to Phoenix because of its commitment to restorative justice and to creating the school culture necessary to deeply implement it. I wanted to be a part of that journey, and since embarking on it I’ve witnessed the transformation of culture and the evolution of mindsets, practices and the overall student experience at Phoenix. Restorative school culture is not just something we talk about - it’s something that we live. From here, we can only move forward in healthy and amazing ways."

  • Kathleen Li

    "I find that Phoenix rewards taking initiative. When I learn new pedagogical techniques from outside workshops, I am encouraged to bring those things back and share them with the team. I feel like my voice is valued in decision making, and I also enjoy a lot of creative freedom with my curriculum. As teachers, we're encouraged to teach lessons that are engaging, meaningful, and relevant to our students."

    “Phoenix has invested in my leadership, unlike any other organization I have worked for. Oftentimes, those working on the ground do not get access to many leadership opportunities, but that isn't the case here. I have had the pleasure of not only coaching teachers, but developing organization initiatives, acting as director of various school based programs, and having my voice heard in network level decisions.”

    “I love how Phoenix gives me the freedom and the ability to innovate. We are constantly trying new ideas to improve our school, and we’re always asking for student input around how to best move forward. Coming from Chelsea myself, it feels so meaningful for me to be able to support students who share a similar background to me and my siblings growing up.”

    “I feel so privileged to work with our students at Phoenix. They really value the relationships that we build with them, and the future pathways that Phoenix provides - pathways which may have been denied to them before coming to our school. And because of that, they work harder, and we help them overcome whatever obstacles are in their way, as a team.”
