Alexis Barnes

Phoenix Springfield

Director of Curriculm and Instuction

Alexis was born in Greensboro, North Carolina and raised there and in Atlanta, Georgia. In 8th grade she decided she wanted to attend Spelman College and proudly graduated with her B.A as a first generation college student in 2013. Upon graduating, she decided to join Teach For America, upholding her college’s motto- a choice to change the world.

As a Las Vegas Valley corp member, she taught 7th grade math at Charles I West Preparatory Academy. At West Prep, Alexis founded the girls mentoring program and served her school as a teacher leader. She is very passionate about empowering students to uncover their the possibilities of their future, despite the constraints that society presents. Her work as a mentor helped students to identify the colleges and careers they wanted for themselves. In 2015, Alexis furthered her own education and received her Masters of Education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction.

After working at her placement school for 3 years, Alexis transitioned to a charter school in Las Vegas where she taught a combination of 7th and 8th grade students in Math and Writing. She also invested herself in the community as the leader of the 7th grade team, a teacher mentor, and founder of the cheerleading program where students participated in their 1st ever cheerleading competition. Alexis has a strong belief that a teacher’s roles stretches beyond the classroom doors and lead many initiatives in the community as a result.
Alexis is very excited to be apart the Phoenix Charter Academy team. She has traveled from the South to the West Coast and now to the East Coast, almost each region in the U.S! While she does greatly appreciate her Southern roots, she really values the wealth of experiences in all these different places! It has been filled with highlights but also proven some harsh realities about our education system. Her goal has been to fight for and ascertain equity so students will have the opportunities they deserve! For this reason, she is proud of the Phoenix mission and the work being done.
