Phoenix Academy Lawrence is a public, in-district high school within the Lawrence Public Schools (LPS) system. Currently, it is the only in-district school within Massachusetts that is run by a charter school network. Phoenix Lawrence operates with the same model as Phoenix Chelsea and Phoenix Springfield.
In November 2011, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education designated the city of Lawrence as a chronically underperforming school district and voted for the state of Massachusetts to take over LPS. In January 2012, the state elected Receiver Jeff Riley to lead the turnaround initiative. Due to Phoenix Chelsea’s success with formerly out-of-school students, Riley invited the emerging network to open the state’s first public, in-district high school, Phoenix Academy Lawrence, catering to this subset of students.
Phoenix Academy Lawrence opened in August 2012, serving 125 students ages 14-22 through the Phoenix model of rigorous academics and relentless support. In June 2014, Phoenix Lawrence graduated its first class of 5 scholars and now has 26 alumnae. The high school serves a diverse student body with a wide range of experiences, educational backgrounds, and challenges to overcome, as seen below.
Phoenix Lawrence offers multi-quarter enrollment, allowing new students to enter throughout the school year. If you are interested in attending Phoenix Lawrence, please contact Wadscar Gomez, our Recruitment and Retention Specialist at firstname.lastname@example.org
